Despite caregivers numbering more than 53 million Americans, representing half a trillion dollars, they remain hidden. And especially for AAPI members, their caregiving is shaped by cultural nuances that include additional family responsibilities and emotions such as guilt, on top of the increased level of anti-AAPI violence and xenophobia that followed the pandemic. Join this revealing discussion of experiences, best practices, and how to include it in your newsgathering.

The panel includes:

Richard Lui, MSNBC anchor and author of the new book “Enough About Me,” was the first Asian American male to anchor a daily cable news program in 2007, but when his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he set aside his growing career to be part-time, prioritizing his father and family.

Sandy Louey is media relations manager for the California Energy Commission and chapter president of AAJA Sacramento. She co-leads a caregivers support group organized by AAJA+ and AAJA Sacramento. As the oldest child of immigrant parents, her caregiving journey started with serving as a translator for medical and financial issues and shifted to providing financial support.

Van Tieu is a multi-skilled journalist for ABC10 in Sacramento. A week before the Vietnamese American journalist started her first anchor job, her father was given one month to live. What followed was a tumultuous year of taking care of her father, her career, and herself.

Moderated by: Marian Liu, project editor of strategic initiatives at The Washington Post. Since her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and dementia, she has been flying to the West Coast to deal with his care.
