Jon Funabiki used the JSK Fellowship year to study Asian economics and politics, which prepared him to cover East and Southeast Asia for The San Diego Union. Later, he served as founding director of the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University; designed and launched the Ford Foundation's journalism grant program with a focus on equity and social justice; served as a professor of journalism at San Francisco State University with a focus on community and social justice journalism; and founded Renaissance Journalism, which supports social justice journalism and storytelling projects. In addition to Stanford, he received the Jefferson Fellowship, East-West Center, Honolulu; National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, University of California, Santa Barbara; and the Gerbode Foundation Professional Fellowship. Now retired from "jobs," he has turned to passion projects in film, writing, storytelling, and consulting.
